Petition on Waiheke Is. farm lease
PA Auckland The Labour member of Parliament for Auckland Central, Mr R. W. Prebble, plans to present to Parliament a petition protesting at the lease of a $1.2 million 1200 ha farm on Waiheke Island. A former director of the Rural Bank and the Wool Board, Mr George Evans, with his two sons, was selected last week to lease the farm, which is owned by the Crown and administered by the Maori Affairs Department. Mr Prebble said the lease of the land had caused considerable concern among island residents who had approached him. He be- ( lieved the presentation of the petition would enable the Petitions Committee to hold, in effect, a Parliamentary inquiry. Mr Prebble said that officers of the Maori Affairs and Lands and Survey deEartments could be called efore the committee.
Mr Evans was not available for comment last evening.
