Small increase in index

PA Wellington The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, says he is encouraged by the “relatively low increases” recorded in the June quarter Producers Price Index. The index, released by the Government Statistician, showed a slight increase in the June quarter compared with the March quarter. However the rate of increase in the index was “much lower than it had been over the previous two years,” Mr Templeton said in a statement.

The quarterly rise of 1.3 per cent for the June quarter compares with that of 4.1 per cent in the same quarter of 1982 arid 4.2 per cent in the same quarter of 1981.

For the year ended June, 1983, the cost of inputs of goods and services (excluding labour) increased 6.2 per cent. Industry output prices increased 6.1 per cent during the same period. Both increases were the lowest annual rises recorded since the Producers Price Index began in December,

The producer price indices measure inputs for the retail sector and eventually show up in the rate of inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index.
