Quarter trade figures up
PA Wellington New Zealand’s Overseas Terms of Trade Index for the June quarter was 74, up two points on the March quarter figure, the Government Statistician said yesterday. The Import Price Index increased 4.2 per cent from the March to the June quarter, while the Export Price Index rose 6.7 per cent during the same period. Export prices in the June quarter included increases for wool (8.7 per cent); meat (8 per cent); and butter (7.2 per cent). For the year ending June, 1983, the Overseas Terms of Trade Index was 74, three points lower than the value for the June, 1982 year.
The Import Price Index climbed 9.4 per cent during the year to June, compared
with a 13.9 per cent rise the previous year. The Export Price Index was up 5.8 per cent for the year, compared to a 14.5 per cent rise the previous year. The Import Volume Index for the June year decreased by 8.8 per cent after an increase of 10.7 per cent for the year ended June, 1982. Commodity groups with significant volume decreases included transport equipment (38.1 per cent), iron and steel (17.1 per cent), and food, live animals, beverages and tobacco (18.6 per cent). The Export Volume Index rose 7.7 per cent for the year ended June, compared to a drop of 1.3 per cent for the previous year. Volume increases of 16 per cent for meat, 14 per cent for wool and 12.4 per cent for butter were recorded.
