Toxic wastes
Sir,—l am appalled to read in this morning’s account of yesterday’s hearing before the Planning Tribunal that it is now stated that toxic wastes may be dumped at Waimairi Beach. Why were we not told about this possibility before the original hearing took place? If it is admitted now that an “infinitesimal” amount of leachate from the dump may reach the beach, we can be quite certain that leachate will reach the beach and not in any infinitesimal amounts. Waimairi Beach may be polluted for many years to come. I trust that the comments on the news today by the Minister for the Environment concerning the penalties that may be imposed on' local authorities allowing toxic wastes to be disposed of in local rubbish dumps will .be carefully considered by the Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee. — Yours, etc.,
ANNE THOMSON. August 23, 1983.
