Heavy trucks in street

Sir,—l and all others I have spoken to," fully agree with Vern Kennedy (July 26) about the pounding by heavy articulated monsters using Innes Road. With a daily vehicle count of around 7000, it does become irksome. With the proposed use of Innes Road as a service road for the 40-tonne refuse trucks in addition to the present loads that hammer along the uneven surface of Innes Road, could authorities tell us whether the road will be rebuilt to carry this burden. — Yours, etc., T. E. WEST. August 11, 1983.

[The Christchurch City Council’s General Manager and Town Clerk, Mr J. H. Gray, replies: “Recent surveys show that the average week-day traffic in Innes Road is approximately 6800 vehicles a day, with an increase to about 9000 vehicles a day on Saturdays because of traffic travelling to New Brighton. Approximately 5 per cent to 6 per cent of the week-day

volume (about 375 vehicles a day) consists of heavy traffic. The final route to be taken by Metropolitan Refuse vehicles is not yet decided, and is the subject of a hearing before the Planning Tribunal. However, if all of these vehicles were to use Innes Road, this would involve a maximum of six return trips a day. This is a very small proportion of the total volume and would not justify any special reconstruction of the existing surface.”]
