Town Hall organ
Sir,—K. I. Armour (August 5) is over-estimating the importance of what sometimes is called “the third kind of organ.” This kind of digitalcomputer electronic organ is different from the other types of electronic organs only in technical respects. As to the musical aspect of it, it is not essentially better
than other electronic organs. The essential point is that, as a musical instrument, it does not perform what a pipe-organ does. Music can be judged only by the well-trained musical ear. The electronic sound is not satisfying at all when artistic results are required. The only right thing to do is to look for a really satisfying instrument. For a town hall organ, only the best should be good enough. A good instrument is expensive; but it is better to try raising the necessary funds than buying something cheaper which would be far and away below the musical level asked for in this particular case.—Yours, etc., BERNARD BARTELINK. August 15, 1983.
