Waltham host for race?
Roads in Waltham might be closed on January 8, 1984, so that the final of a three-round international kart series can be run on the streets. The racing will be for three hours on a Sunday afternoon, and should not cause too much disruption to traffic, the City Council’s works and traffic committee has been told. Waltham has been selected because of its excellent road surface. Karts have a ground clearance of only a few centimetres and 'need a very smooth surface. It is intended to close the roads from 11.30 a.m. to 4.45
p.m. so that a practice can be held before the competitive races. Streets affected by the closing will be: Waltham Road, Mowbray Street, Shakespeare Road, Brisbane Street, Gasson Street, Wordsworth Street, Kingsley Street and Byron Street. The races will be held only if crowd barriers and spectator areas are to the satisfaction of the Ministry of Transport and City Council staff. The Christchurch Kart Club has a public liability cover for the event of $200,000.
