N.Z. conference of handicapped

The first conference of intellectually handicapped Kle in New Zealand will eld in Christchurch. The conference will be held in conjunction with the annual conference and meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Intellectually Handicapped from August 31 to September 2. About 50 handicapped people from throughout New Zealand will attend the conference to discuss issues of common concern. The I.H.C. conference will be the first in Christchurch for 10 years. “In that 10 years, there has been a rapid expansion of services for intellectually handicapped people throughout New Zealand,”

said the conference organising secretary, Mr Alex Clark. “The Canterbury branch alone has opened six new family homes and two new workshop facilities in that decade, plus independent flats and a much-improved service to parents and intellectually handicapped children and adults,” he said. Before the conference, a British campaigner for the rights of the intellectually handicapped, Ms Ann Shearer, will visit I.H.C. branches in New Zealand. She will report to the conference on her observations of the facilities available to the intellectually handicapped in New Zealand.
