Soccer win for United
By DAVID LEGGAT Christchurch Mogal United stuttered its way into the fourth round of the Adidas Chatham Cup with an uninspiring 4-2 win over a gallant Cashmere-Wanderers team at English Park last evening. The Rothmans League leaders exhibited all the traits of a team which has not played together for a month. There was too much sloppy passing and indecisive teamwork, especially in the first half, for it to look back on the match with much satisfaction.
However, it was a tough, demanding match, which is just what it would have wanted with the national league to restart on Sunday after a four-week lay-off. It was Jarman who robbed Bobby Almond midway through the first half. He slipped the ball into the path of Smith and the Hertz
League’s outstanding striker took his chance expertly. Cashmere’s 1-0 half-time lead — a goal by Mark Smith — was disastrously tossed away five minutes after the interval when its big defender, John Wilson, gave away a penalty, converted by Ricky Hill.
Hill added his second penalty when he was brought down, having broken through, but Cashmere bravely equalised with the best goal of the match. Angus Neave, Smith and Graham Ford combined to split the United defence and Smith made no mistake from 12 metres.
Keith Braithwaite regained the lead for United with a good, diving header from a Paul Wilkinson free-kick, and Hill made sure of the win when he nudged a cross beyond Nicholls three minutes from the end.
