Lilley wins close bout
A barrage of punches in the third and final round carried Brendon Lilley (Woolston Workingmen’s Club) to a majority points decision over Paul Graham (Barry’s Gym) in the main amateur boxing bout at the Hillsborough Tavern
last evening. One judge scored the contest in favour of Graham, 60-57, another had Lilley ahead, 5958, and the third, Harold Lloyd, had the points tied at 59-59. Mr Lloyd broke the deadlock by voting for Lilley because the Woolston competitor had been responsible for most of the leading-off during the fight. Grahatn, only 18, and conceding six years to his opponent, was frequently forced on to the back foot, but he accumulated points in the first and second rounds before Lilley managed to get through Gfaham’s defences. The pattern changed in the
final round, as Lilley mounted aggressive attacks from the start to take a very close decision. Influenza caused the withdrawals of five boxers yesterday and forced officials to considerably alter the planned
programme. Results.— Brendon Lilley (Woolston) beat Paul Graham (Barry’s), majority points; Clive Bishop (Crichton Cobbers) beat Fred Paul (Woolston), points; Shane Everest (Barry’s) beat Kevin Anderson (Barry’s), points; Colin Adamson (Woolston) beat Steven Dolan (Ashburton), r.s.c. round 2; Bill Knight (Barry’s) beat Craig Manson (Barry’s), majority points; Noel Colombus (Woolston) beat Dean Calvert (Woolston), points; Carl Blythe (Barry’s) neat Carl Franklin (Crichton Cobbers), majority points; Kerry White (BAffy’s) beat Neil Samheli (Fidow’s), majority points.
