PA Auckland Counties, scoring four tries to one, beat North Auckland, 26-10, in a national first division rugby championship game at Pukekohe yesterday. Although Counties deserved to win, the score was no indication of the respective merits of the sides on the day. Playing with the wind in the first half, the North Auckland forwards took control, winning the firsthalf line-outs, 13-8, and the rucks and mauls, 8-4.

Against the run of play, Counties led, 4-3, at halftime. It took Counties 10 minutes to move into the North Auckland half, and they took the scoring opportunities. Scorers: Counties: B. Robertson, A. Dawson (2), J. Harvey, tries; Harvey a penalty and two conversions; Robertson a dropped goal. North Auckland: C. Hull a try; G. Valli a penalty and D. Haynes a dropped goal.
