Bush dominates

PA Masterton Nobody could have begrudged Wairarapa-Bush its 10-3 win over Hawke’s Bay at a national championship first division rugby match played under ideal conditions at Masterton yesterday. Wairarapa-Bush completely dominated proceedings in the first half, with the forwards winning a regular supply of good ball from line-outs and mauls and linking well with their backs and short passing rushes. The opening 15 minutes of the second spell saw the Hawke’s Bay pack lift its

game and some indifferent tackling by Wairarapa-Bush allowed the largely inexperienced Bay back line to launch three or four strong attacks. Wairarapa-Bush weathered this storm and then came back to have much the better of the final quarter, and in the end could feel cheated by its sevenpoint winning margain. Bush led, 6-0, at half-time. Neil Kjestrup scored a try for Wairarapa-Bush, Phillip Rutene kicked a field goal, and Charlie Kaka kicked a penalty. Hawkes Bay’s points came from a penalty to Peter O’Shaunessy.
