Waikato in control
PA Hamilton Fast enterprising rugby by Waikato brought a 38-8 victory over a strong Harlequins XV including eight players from Australia at Hamilton yesterday. The first 20 minutes were dominated by the Harlequins and at half-time Waikato led only, 10-4. In the second' half, however, Waikato was completely in control and the score mounted steadily with the home team’s backs in brilliant form. Arthur Stone and Chris Ellis were outstanding in the mid-field, while up front
there was excellent loose forward play by Wayne Bullot and an impressive tight game by the loosehead prop, Paul Koteka. James Black had a good game at full-back for the Harlequins who were well led by a former Australian half-back, John Hipwell. Tries for Waikato were scored by Bruce Smith, Stone, Graeme Holmes, John Fleming and Koteka. The new fullback, Tim Purcell converted three tries and kicked two penalties, while John Boe kicked two dropped goals. The Harlequins’ tries were scored by Hipwell and Brown.
