Victim of raid unable to move

A Chinese man is paralysed after being attacked in the armed raid on a card school at an Opawa Road house on Saturday evening. Mr Kok Keil Ho, aged 29, suffered a fractured skull when one of the four robbers hit him on the head with a softball bat — “presumably for the purpose of convincing them that they meant business,” said Detective Inspector N. J. Stokes. Mr Kok underwent surgery at Christchurch Hospital’s neurosurgical unit. He is paralysed, but is reported to be in a stable condition. Another man is in a satisfactory condition in hospital with fractures to the jaw and cheek-bone. Eighteen people were in the Opawa Road house when the four men, armed with a sword, shotgun, rifle, and a softball bat, sneaked in through a laundry window. Most of the occupants of the house were playing cards, the police said. Others were watching television. The robbers ordered all 18 people to line up facing a wall, and empty their pockets. It was at that stage that Mr Kok and the other man were struck. Detectives are following up several leads in the hunt for the robbers. They are not sure of the amount of money stolen, but it was believed to be several thousand dollars. The card game had been going on for several hours when the raiders struck.
