Defending title
Wellington, unbeaten at Tokoroa last year, will defend its title in the New Zealand under-18 boys' softball tournament which begins at Porritt Park on Monday. Fourteen teams will contest the four-day tournament with three late A section withdrawals from the original entry list. Teams will play a round robin and after that there will be cross-overs. Canterbury will take three pitchers into the tournament. Two of them, Mac Tangaroa (Richmond) brother of the New Zealand B representative, Chubb
Tangaroa and Steve Vivian (Papanui) play senior A softball and the third is Craig Coulter. The Canterbury selector-coach. Mr Doug Chee, expects his team to be in the top four. Last year Canterbury was placed fourth. The teams are:— Section A: Auckland. Horowhenua. Mid—Canterbury, North Shore, Southland and Wellington. Section B: Bay of Plenty, Canterbury, Counties, Hutt Valley, Manawatu. Otago, South Canterbury, Waikato. One of these teams may be placed instead in the A section.
