Report on fencing off of beach expected today

PA Auckland A special report on the fencing off of Pakiri Beach, prepared by the Lands and Survey Department, was expected in the office of the Minister of Lands. Mr Elworthy, yesterday. The Minister called for the report after Maori land owners closed the popular east coast beach. 96km north of Auckland, two days before Christmas and charged $1 for entry. The owners, the Pakiri G Trust, put up the fencing because it felt people had abused the beach by smashing bottles, driving vehicles on it. and ripping up marram grass sown. to prevent erosion.

Constable B. W. J. Haining. of the Warkworth police, who has been making regular visits to the beach, said yesterday that all was quiet at Pakiri. . He did not think the $1 entrance fee had deterred people from going' to the beach.
