Shooting inquiry ‘another 10 days’
PA Wellington The police inquiry into the fatal shooting of John Edward Morgan is expected to take at least another 10 days to complete. Mr Morgan, aged 30, was shot by the police after he attacked a police dog handler with an axe. The Christmas Eve shooting at Wainuiomat'a occurred after a high-speed chase. Mr Morgan was suspected to have been involved in the fatal stabbing earlier the same day of Sinclair Lewis Inglis, aged 24. at a Wellington disco. The Wellington police district commander, Deputy Assistant Commissioner W. R. Fleming, said that the complex investigation into the shooting would take at least another 10 days. He said that investigators had to piece together events, get a pathologist’s report and reports from other analysts, and study carefully all the fflCtS. Once completed, the file would be given to Mr Fleming who would present it to the Commissioner of Police. Mr R. J Walton, who might decide to act on the file himself or pass it to the Solicitor-General, Mr D. P. Neazor, for study. The injured policeman was off work and recovering, said Mr Fleming.
