Record 1190c for Merino
PA Dunedin Records fell at the Dunedin wool sale yesterday when prices for super-fine Merino hogget wool soared to 1190 c a kilogram. About 55 per cent of the offering was fine wool. Only a small quantity of superfine hogget was available and buyers sought it eagerly.
The Christchurch record greasy wool price was passed within an hour of the sale’s opening, and by the afternoon the record stood at 1190 c for a bale of super-fine Merjno hogget fleece. It was sold in the Wrightson N.M.A. catalogue for Kane and Sullivan of Little Valley, near Alexandra.
Another good price from the same catalogue was 1000 c a kilogram for a bale
of similar super-fine Merino hogget, from the account of A. C. Sanders and Sons, Matangi station also near Alexandra. The buyer of these lots and several other superfine offerings was Mr Jim Gillies a buyer for G. Modiano.
About 6000 bales of Merino were on offer and, compared with the last fine-wool sale at Christchurch, on November 5, prices were generally firm to 7.5 per cent dearer.
During the .day several sales were made above the Christchurch record of 647 c.
The official report also said that although extra-fine Halfbred was in buyers’ favour all other Halfbred fleece, and skirtings, were firm to 2.5 per cent dearer. Compared with the Napier
sale on November 19,. fine crossbred fleece was barely steady, and medium and strong, fleece firm. Crossbred skirtings and oddments were in sellers’ favour.
The main competition came from Western Europe, supported by the Far East, Eastern Europe, and New Zealand mills. The Wool Board bid on about 19 per cent of the offering and bought 4 per cent.
The hill-country fine wools were superbly presented and reflected a good winter. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 257.96 c a kilogram. Based on this, a Government supplementary payment of 24.190 per cent will apply to all wool sold at the sale and all •wool sold privately from midnight November 24. to midnight November 25. The market indicator was 249 c.
