Driving care

Sir,—l. J. McKinnon’s letter (October 11) is from a person with considerable driving experience and clearly illustrates the need for more careful driving by Christchurch motorists. I have spent 23 years witnessing the actions and the carnage created by bad driving. This has led me to the firm opinion that the only way to reduce the slaughter and the road toll is to make the negligent party pay for the hospital treatment of the accident victims, the funerals of the dead and transfer the A.C.C. benefits to a scheme for funding the medical and surgical costs for people who suffer from genuine illnesses. Does the Christchurch smog affect the brains as well as the lungs of the drivers who seem to exercise no common sense, or is it all alcohol and drug induced?— Yours, etc., 1 R. S. PALMER. October 11, 1982.
