Birching
Sir,—The Government needs a diversion, obviously, for ’again Mr Couch is bringing back the birch — this time for rape. What is brewing? More trouble with C.E.R., the A.8.C., Clyde, Marsden Point or social welfare? Probably the latter. Paternalism in our society grows hourly. Our male spokesman for women, and our Prime Minister know how we women feel about adoption, though even conservative women oppose their . views.' Divide and conquer worked with the' tour; why not with
women? Now Mr Quigley suggests removing the family benefit. For many home-based women, family benefit is the only income they handle as of right. With unemployment, education cuts, and tax, putting women firmly back in the home, its removal would further diminish their status as women and mothers. Mr BirchCouch. “The vicious crime of rape will be stamped out" when society, parliamentarians leading, respects women 'as people.—Yours, etc.,
