Salmon fishing
Sir,—The promoters of commercial sea-cage rearing and pond-raising of quinnat salmon in New Zealand would be well advised to note the assurance given to recreational interests by the Minister of Fisheries, Mr at the 1980 salmon symposium. Mr MacIntyre is on record as saying that recreational fishery has first priority in any conflict with commercial development. Of the three forms of salmon commercialisation, pond-rais-ing, sea-cage rearing and ocean-ranching, only the latter will positively contribute to the protection of existing salmon rivers: In view of the angler’s acceptance of ocean-ranching why are other development interests (“The Press,” October 6) now insisting on forms of commercialisation which by nature must take stocks from our salmon rivers thus lessening the number of salmon available to anglers? — Yours, etc.,
K. F. D. HUGHEY, President, N.Z.'Salmon Anglers Association. October 10, 1982.
