Bullfighting

Sir,-J. C. Gray’s suggestion (October 5) that Alison Gibb turns off . any programme that offends reveals an all tpo com-

mon negative attitude that could be responsible for the decline in standards of programmes, attitudes, and general behaviour. J. C. Gray misinterpreted Alison Gibb's letter, in which she protested against the diabolical “sport” of bullfighting. The fact that this has continued for centuries gives no reason for us to tolerate or accept such programmes. Turning off is not the answer and solves nothing in the struggle to have bullfighting prohibited. That “human" beings desire (and pay) to witness such cruelty and torment to a creature especially bred for the purpose, reinforces the fact that man's intrinsic lower nature still seeks gratification through the suffering inflicted. Ecclesiastes iii v. 18-21 are worth reading. — Yours, etc., ESTELLE WIN. October 10, 1982.
