Spirit quest for $2M launched
PA Auckland A major campaign to raise funds to build the sail training ship. Spirit of New Zealand, has been launched by the yachtsman, Peter Blake. Called the Spirit of New Zealand Quest, the.campaign is aimed at raising most of the more than $2 million needed to design and build the vessel. There are three sections to the quest with $lO,OOO and $5OOO cash prizes, and $5OOO travel prizes from Air New Zealand. Prizes will also be awarded for raising the most funds. Mr Blake said the cam-
paign would include an essay competition asking young New Zealanders who have raised at least $25 for the vessel to write about their dreams. The prize is $lO,OOO, the amount required to fulfil the dream, “so obviously they have to do a bit of accounting with it,” Mr Blake said. The Spirit of Adventure Trust hopes a start will be made on the 42.7 m threemasted brigantine early next year. It will carry 40 trainees and a crew of eight. The Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, opened the fund-raising campaign in June.
