Society buys racehorse

PA Auckland The New Zealand society for the Intellectually Handicapped is now the proud owner of a $20,000 two-year-old racehorse. The unnamed brown colt was bought by the president of the King Country branch, Mr Colin Meads, at a horses-in-training sale at the Ellerslie racecourse on Thursday evening. By Taipan II from Tatter, the horse will be the first prize in an I.H.C. raffle later this year. ■Mr Meads and another member of the I.H.C. national fund-raising com-

mittee. Mr Gary Meyer, were at Ellerslie on Thursday afternoon "spotting the talent" and had selected four two-year-olds from the 104 horses on display. Both committee members were enthusiastic about the venture, and hoped the buying of horses for raffling could become an annual event for the society. “We are tapping a fundraising market we do not usually get in the betting public." said Mr Meyer. First prize will not only be the horse, but one year’s free training by an Awapuni trainer, Margaret Bull.
