Dumping of timber alleged

PA Wellington Australian customs officials are .inquiring into alleged dumping of New Zealand timber in Australia, the Government has said. The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, said that ’the Australian timber industry had applied to customs authorities for antidumping measures and this prompted the inquiry. The type of timber concerned was square-dressed structural softwood, he said. The Australian customs was investigating how much timber cost in New Zealand and comparing it with the export selling price. It would also investigate whether the alleged dumping was harmful to the Australian industry. and then decide whether to" consult the New Zealand Government. "Should the present inquiry proceed to the consultation stage, the Government would give consideration to the issues raised," Mr Templeton said. “The New Zealand industry would have the opportunity to present its case to the Australian customs before the Australian Government makes any final decision on the application,” he said.
