Mary O’Connor, (University) will start as favourites for the Canterbury senior road championship titles on a hew course at Clarkville on Saturday. Birnie did not. run in the Canterbury cross-country championships to defend his title, but finished third in the nationals and broke the open record on the

last lap of the Akaroa relay. Mary O’Connor looks a clear favourite to retain her senior women's title, with most opposition coming from her teammates Sheryl McEwan, Lynn and Debbie Tipper and Christine Burden. Margaret Walker (St Martins). Robyn Miles (Olympic) and Michelle Hadley (New Brighton). The national junior cross country champion Colin McDonald (Technical) should run away with the junior title, which has only 10 starters.'
