Environmental report on wetland

Parliamentary reporter The Environmental Council has been asked for a report on the environmental implications of wetland use and management, with appropriate recommendations. Seven terms of reference have been set by the Minister for the Environment, Dr Shearer:— • To assess the state of wetlands, and past and future trends. O To identify the diverse aims for the management of wetlands. ® To summarise present policies for .wetlands and peatlands. © To pinpoint deficiencies. @ To formulate and examine

policy options. ® To" indicate preferred options. ® To identify actions that could be taken in the light of the preferred options. Submissions have been sought by public advertisement and by direct requests to some organisations. The proposed New Zealand conservation strategy on integrating conservation and development has emphasised the need for the wise management of remaining wetlands. It said that “in future, the benefits of gaining extra farmland would need to be carefully balanced against the benefits of conserving wetlands."
