Harvard flies after restoration
, PA Masterton A 40-year-old former Air Force Harvard trainer plane, last flown 26 years ago and now restored to its original condition and decor,'had its first test flight on Sunday. Wing Commander John Lanham, officer commanding No. 75 Squadron R.N.Z.A.K, swapped the controls of his familiar Skyhawk to test-fly the Harvard. It has been restored to airworthiness by the Sport and Vintage Aviation Society, of Masterton, at a cost of $13,000. / An Australian offer of $35,000 has already been received for the Harvard, which was brought to New
Zealand under Lend Lease in World War II.; t.. ; ' Wing Commander Lanham put the Harvard through its paces with an expert in the trainee seat, retired Air Commodore Stan Quill, a World War II pilot with many hours of flying Harvards. Air Commodore Quill bought the Harvard in bits from the R.N.Z.A.F., and “sold” it to the society for ?1. ' The Harvard will be flown again next week-end for a public demonstration" at Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, and also will be available for solo flying by qualified-pilots for type ratings,
