Council concern after scuffle
A scuffle broke .out as devotees-of the Hare Krishna movement tried to hand out literature in Cathedral Square yesterday. The altercation happened after a man tore up a copy of the movement’s' glossy magazine, "Back to Godhead,” copies of which were being given to people in the Square. No-one was injured and there was no arrest, but the Christchurch .City Council will look into the question of Hare Krishna followers accosting people in Cathedral Square and handing out literature A Christchurch . City Coun-
cil officer, Mrs J. D. Sadler, said yesterday that any group wishing to distribute literature in the Square had to apply in writing to the council. Non-profit-making organisations only could apply. If permission were granted, an information table had to be set up so that any literature was distributed from one point, “not by people wandering about,” said Mrs Sadler. She said that the Hare Krishna movement had not applied for permission to hand out literature in the Square, and that the matter would be "followed up."
