Fire strikes toyshop

The long-established Barons Toyshop at 200 High Street was damaged by fire just after closing time yesterday. The old shop was filled with smoke when five engines from the Central Fire Station arrived at 5.38 p.m., and firemen had to use breathing apparatus. The fire itself caused minor structural damage only, but there was extensive smoke and water damage to

stock. The cause of the fire was not known. Forestry workers and the Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade spent five hours yesterday fighting a plantation fire near the Clarence River bridge, about 40 kilometres north of Kaikoura., The fire, which started about 3 p.m. in warm northwesterly winds, destroyed a small area of trees before it was contained.
