Censorship of TV film

Sir,—The Australian TV audience recently saw an episode of “Brideshead Revisited," which included a sensitively presented sexual encounter. Just last week an Australian friend chanced to remark that we Kiwis probably would not be allowed to see it. His prediction was correct. Mr Fabian, of the Broadcasting Corporation. is quoted (“The Press,” August 20) as saying that the scene, which was not a homosexual one, “does not conform with commonly accepted standards of decency," and has had to be cut. From what I have seen of this programme so far, I find this most surprising. TV continues to expose our children to the ultimate obscenity of violent death, while we adults are not to be allowed to see a natural sex scene which forms part of an outstanding series. We should remember that even TV censors start life as a result of a sexual encounter. — Yours, etc., P. H. SCOTTER. August 20, 1982.
