Dogs
Sir—Dogs should not be “recognised as a part of our life,” as your correspondent Ivy V. Kench (August 19) puts it. They are not “hounded” (her word) “and blamed for the irresponsible owner,” but. for what they do. The dog which savaged our pet hens a month or two ago proved to be a well-cared-for dog which had found a hole in its home fence; the dog which ripped the wire off our fowl-run two years ago was very much loved by its owner — so much that she hid it every time the dog ranger came near. We did not find the dog which overturned our guinea-pig hutch and left my young daughter’s pregnant pet ripped open on the lawn with its unborn babies strewn around it. Dogs are carnivores, close to wolves, and should be recognised as such by restrict-
ing them to where their killer instincts can be usefully employed. — Yours, etc.. ROBIN MITCHELL. August 19. 1982.
