Liquor licences
Sir, — The recent issuing of liquor licences to 36 Christchurch sports clubs makes a mockery.of our supposed concern for the ever-increasing alcohol-related problems in our society. Much time and money is spent on trying to find new ways of dealing with the problem of excessive drinking and we are justifiably horrified at the increasing number of road accidents and crimes of violence. 1 would like to suggest that the difficulties are being compounded by the issuing of more and more licences, thus opening up still more avenues for the consumption of alcohol and providing more opportunities for the drinking and driving situation to arise. I do wonder if we really do care and if all our tears for the victims of violence and road accidents are indeed genuine. — Yours, etc., D. STOCKER. July 11. 1982.
