Mayor jumps from taxi
PA Auckland The Mayor of Devonport jumped from a taxi he was driving yesterday after a youth threatened him with a knife. The driver, Mr W. D. Titchener, said later that his back-seat passenger told him: “Get out or you’ve had it." The youth, aged 15. then drove off in the car, starting a high-speed chase which ended more than 100 km away in the Waikino Gorge, near Paeroa.
After leaving Drury, the taxi was seen at Bombay by a Pukekohe policeman. Constable Martin Douglas, who gave chase. They passed through
Maramarua. Ngatea, and Paeroa before Mr Douglas apprehended the youth in a roadside rest area on the way to Waihi. Mr Titchener, aged 60, was badly shaken by his experience, but unhurt.
“I was pretty concerned for my safety. But not so frightened that I couldn't speak to him (the youth)," he said. “After I saw the knife I just told him to take it easy and talk it out." He said it was the first time in 22 years of driving taxis that 'he had been threatened. . Mr . Titchener was elected Mayor of Devonport in June. 1980.
