Work on port at Cooks
PA ’. Wellington Work has started on the reconstruction of quay walls at Avatiu, Harbour, Rarotonga. according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Steel sheet piling, now badly corroded, is being replaced by reinforced concrete piling. The project, expected to cost more than $2.7 million, forms part of the Government’s aid programme in the Cook Islands.
Avatiu Harbour was established in the 19605. In recent years, deterioration of. the piling has limited dredging work on the perimeter of the harbour basin, with the result that silting has posed a danger to shipping.
