Brucellosis, TB levy increased

New measures to reduce Government expenditure on schemes to eradicate brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis have been announced, to take effect from July 1. The cattle industry would be required to contribute 25 per cent of the costs of eradication, said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr MacIntyre). this would be by way of an increased levy on cattle slaughtered, from the present 24c a head to $2.16. of which $2 would go towards the eradication schemes, he said.

Compensation paid by the Government on reactor cattle destroyed would be 75 per cent of the market value of the animal, compared with 95 per cent at present. Government expenditure would be reduced $2.1 million in 1982-83, with savings of $4.75 million in future years.
