Mairehau staked a strong claim for a position in the top four of the A grade playoff .when it beat last year's champion, Shirley Boys', in the . second round of “The Press”' schools’ chess competition. / The contest was hard fought with several games extending beyond the two hours' minimum requirement and five of the six games resulted in draws. Mairehau struck the decisive blow on board five when Craig Daken
