Post Office grants to schools
More than $19,000 in grants will be paid by the Post Office Savings Bank to 292 Christchurch schools. The schools are among 2000 which are part of the school banking system. A total of $196,000 will be paid to these schools, an increase of 60 per cent on grants made in previous years. The Chief Postmaster, Mr N. I. Williams, said that the grants are made in appreciation of teachers and parents' support in encouraging children to save. The grants are used for cultural and recreational activities.
The amount given to each school, which ranges from $8 to $393, is based on the number of deposits made during 1981. The number of deposits lodged during the year was down on 1980 but 21 more schools had joined the scheme. There are 455.686 account-holders, who during the 1981 financial year made 3,826,827 deposits.
