Burrowes’ 74-game winning streak ends

A run of 74 consecutive A grade table tennis singles wins dating back to the 1980 winter season came to an end for Maurice Burrowes when the 26-year-old Avonside player was beaten by University's Michael Prisk at the Selwyn Street Hall on Monday. Burrowes was beaten. 2119, 21-17, by Prisk in a fastmoving game which the University player dominated in the later stages.

Despite the loss Burrowes's Avonside 1 team beat University, 7-5, while in the other matches, Linwood 1 moved into second place in the competition behind Avonside with a 7-5 win over Riccarton 1. Linwood II beat Avonside 111, 11-1, and Dallington beat Riccarton 11. 1716, on games. In the feature singles clash of the evening, Burrowes, the top-ranked Canterbury men's singles player, seemed a little tentative at times while Prisk was happy to hit out continually, despite periods where he made a rash of errors. The tactic paid off for the 18-year-old student as he managed to put more of his occasionally brilliant fast, flat loop-drives on to the table than off. Burrowes looked to be heading for his seventy-fifth consecutive win in the first set though. The Avonside

man led at 6-4. 11-9 and 18-17 and Prisk. ranked fourth in Canterbury, did not seem to be able to consistently hit through Burrowes' block defence. But Prisk used his serve shrewdly at 18-17 and took the opportunity to attack first and put pressure on his more experienced opponent. A well-timed forehand drive which clipped the net on the way down the line finished the game. Prisk led throughout the second game, and despite a fighting effort from Burrowes to get from 3-10 to 1010, the Canterbury champion kept his chances alive by matching Burrowes close to the table and scoring the odd-winner from ' further back.

, The improving form of Linwood II continued against Avonside 111 with Michael Hamel. Steven Dixon and Stephen Adamson unbeaten in the singles.

Avonside’s John Richards, ranked eighth in Canterbury last year, might have upset Hamel in his first game of the evening but for lapses of g concentration at vital stages of the match. Richards', displaying the smooth attacking style that he is capable of, led to 20-16 in the opening set but then casually allowed Hamel to draw level with a series of unforced errors. Hamel was grateful for the let-off and won the next game easily.

In a marathon encounter that did not finish until just before 1 a.m., Linwood 1 surprisingly held on for its fourth win of the season after taking the vital last doubles matches against Riccarton.

Dallington edged out Riccarton II by a game thanks mainly to Dennis Kalin, who won all his three singles matches. Results:— Linwood I 7, Riccarton I 5
