Teesdale wins rally

PA Hamilton A change of luck enabled the Auckland rally driver, Tony Teesdale, to win his first national championship event at Tokoroa yesterday. Teesdale. who moved from Tokoroa at the end of last year, won the first round of this year's championship — the Tokoroa Europa Dealers Rally — by 43 seconds from his fellow Auckland Escort driver, Neil Allport. Teesdale lost more than

three minutes when he punctured early in the second special stage. In his attempt to make up the deficit, he won eight of the 10 stages. But it took a switch of luck when rally leader Alan Mitchell (Feilding) broke an axle in his Escort on the third last stage to give Teesdale the victory. At that stage he had been two minutes behind Mitchell and 17 seconds behind Allport. Two stages of the night time rally had to be cancelled by the organisers.

The first stage, a publicitysection on Tokoroa streets, had to be called off due to lack of crowd control, and the sixth stage results were disregarded when half the field took .a wrong turning. Results: T. Teesdale, G. Horne (Auckland. Escort) 152 min 17s. 1; N. Allport. J. Cowan (Auckland. Escort) 153:0. 2; P. Adams, J. Scott (Auckland, Toyota Starlet) 160:3. 3; M. Chandler. D. Campbell (Auckland, Lancer) 161:13, 4; B. Herbert. T. Jury (Woodville. Lancer) 161:42. 5.
