Mount’s lead up

Mount Wellington leads the Rothmans Soccer League competition by six points after beating the lowly East Coast Bays, 1-0, in Auckland yesterday.

In the other two matches played. Dunedin City moved up to second place in the competition after chalking up its fifth 1-0 win of the season at home to Hanimex North Shore, while National Mutual Miramar surprisingly won its local derby against Wellington Diamond United, 1-0, at the Basin Reserve. An old hand and a new face combined to give Dunedin its sixth win.

Jim Taylor, who was playing in his hundredth game in the national league, gave a courageous display in the City goal, and John Brickell celebrated his first national league game by scoring City’s goal.

North Shore was rarely in the game and Brickeli’s goal in the opening minute of the second half briefly sparked the game into life. A seventy-first minute goal by Costa Leonidas enabled Miramar to complete a Rothmans soccer league double for the season over Diamond United.

Until the goal, the two Wellington sides had battled dourly in the midfield.

Diamond started the game more positively, winning the ball in the midfield, but there was a lack of quality ball delivered to the front runners.

Miramar, with Mike Simeonoff battling well in their midfield, fought for everything, keeping pressure on throughout.

The Mount was a trifle lucky to take both points from Bavs.

‘ The leader won only after Bays had missed a first-half penalty which would have given them'the lead and a decided advantage, especially as the home side dominated the second spell. The only goal of the game came after 75 minutes when a free kick was awarded just outside the penalty area and Alex Metzger banged it home just inside the post.
