Greig’s marathon bid

Canterbury’s Commonwealth Games marathon representative, Don Greig, leaves Christchurch today to compete in tomorrow's Diamond Pasta marathon in Auckland.

Greig said yesterday that he was only “70 per cent fit” at present but was pleased with his recent fast time in the Kairaki to Christchurch 20km race and would aim for a time of about 2hr 15min, in the Pasta marathon. That time is over a minute slower than his personal best which he set when finishing second to Kevin Ryan in the Winstone Wiri marathon last November, but should be fast enough to keep him within striking distance of the

leaders, including Ryan. Besides Ryan there is Rod Dixon. Paul Ballinger, Jack Foster, Terry Manners and Euan Robertson among . the New Zealanders and several overseas entrants capable of running between 2:14 and 2:15. They include Italians, Orlando Pizzalato and Vito Basiliano, the American, Mike Cassidy, and the Belgians, Karel Lismont and Hendrik Schoofs. Lismont has a best time of 2:11:12 and Schoofs a time of 2:12:12.

Greig said that he wanted to run the Pasta marathon at a more even pace than he had run other marathons so that he could develop better pace judgment in preparation for the Brisbane Games.
