Six-month wait for Leonard

NZPA-Reuter Washington The world welterweight champion, Sugar Ray Leonard, in his first appearance since undergoing an eye operation, said yesterday he could see normally but would wait six months before deciding whether to box again or quit. If Leonard retires because of the May 9 operation for a partially detached retina in his left eye which "I can honestly say has been reattached successfully,” he said he would like to go into television or acting.

Leonard said: “Fortunately, I have six months to think about it. Within six months I will be absolutely sure. I will make a sensible decision.”

But he stressed: “I will be the one to say ‘quit’ and I will not be influenced or advised by anyone.” Many prominent boxing figures and relatives, including his wife and young son, have advised the multimillionaire Leonard to hang up his gloves and not risk losing his left eye.
