Road toll
Sir.—After years of pathetic chatter about causes of death on our roads, more authorities are accepting that bad driving is paramount. Mr Dunlop, retired senior city traffic officer, leaves with a feeling of failure, but he was an able administrator facing a Transport Act rivalling Whitaker's Almanack. As he says) courtesy could cut the accident rate, but this is neither within the field of enforcement nor, indeed, likely to improve by scolding. Any further traffic legislation should be opposed as potentially murderous. The latest turning rule is stupid and dangerous but must be retained, for every change adds confusion. A three-year moratorium on fiddling with traffic rules, and rigorous . enforcement of existing law on limits, lights, lanes and liquor, even for commercial drivers and businessmen. would be worth a trial. — Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. April 14, 1982.
