Air pollution
Sir,—J. C. Dodgshun has referred to D.S.I.R. Report No. 55. Stagnant air conditions in Christchurch characterised by ground frosts occur mainly in winter when the emission of smoke from domestic sources is greatest. Motor-car exhaust pollutants tend to accumulate more in still, winter weather, and seemingly are absorbed on the tiny, particles of domestic smoke. The visible smoke consists of carcinogenic hydrocarbons already, and also provides the means to carry other pollutants into the respiratory system. The summer levels of nitrous oxides and the obvious odours from the Bromley sewage works are proof of summer atmospheric pollution. Yet the Department of Health reports, for 1981: “The major source of smoke is the domestic fire and the major source of sulphur dioxide is commercial and industrial plant.” I accept this as an objective assessment. — Yours, etc., PATRICK NEARY. April 15, 1982.
