Second smelter
Sir,—Mr Birch has confirmed the Government’s support for the Aramoana smelter again despite the lack of a third partner. Alusuisse is one of the world’s big aluminium companies employing expert economc advisers; surely its decision to withdraw from the project should make our Government act with caution. I had been under the impression that this smelter was to be a private sector development. Therefore, I can understand Fletcher Challenge’s disappointment in the lack of overseas excitement but why is the National Government so concerned?—Yours, etc., CELIA LYNCH. March 15, 1982.
