Nuclear weapons

Sir,—ln the .discussion by the Lyttelton Borough Council’s finance committee on declaring the town a nuclear-free zone, a councillor said that the Devonport council was the only New Zealand local body to have done so (“The Press,” March 10). The Birkenhead City Council and the Great Barrier Island and Waiheke Island councils have also declared their areas nuclear-free. Devonport and Birkenhead fear possible nuclear use of the new naval wharf and the ammunition depot to the west. People on “the Barrier” and Waiheke do not want to see nuclear ships pass their doors. Action is also under way in Onehunga, Whangarei, Whangaroa, Thames-Coromandel, Tauranga and Hastings. Auckland City and Takapuna narrowly decided against action ... by 10 votes to 9 and 8 to 6 respectively. The smaller places act first—Yours, etc., PHILIP SOLJAK, Vice-President, Auckland branch, United Nations Assn. March 14, 1982.
