Girl stabbed, raped

PA • ■ Palmerston North A man, aged 23, will appear in the District Court at Palmerston North today, charged with the abduction, rape, and attempted murder of a girl, aged 16, in Feilding on Friday night. A police spokesman said the girl was stabbed, beaten, and raped during a brutal attack in the isolated Mount Biggs . area, 9km north of Feilding. After the attack the girl was left .for dead on a roadside grass verge where she was found seven hours later by two railway

workers. She. had stab wounds to the back and chest. Three stab wounds to one lung had caused it to collapse. Palmerston North Hospital staff said the girl’s condition was satisfactory. The man was arrested at Feilding at 9 p.m. on Saturday after extensive inquiries by a big police team. Inquiries into the incident continued yesterday with a search for another girl said to have jumped from a car in the West Street area of Feilding at 11.40 p.m.. on Friday.
