Reaction to talk of cuts

PA Auckland The New Zealand Educational Institute has reacted quickly to the suggestion by the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) that the Government may reduce the number of researchers and inspectors. A national executive member of the N.Z.E.1., Mr Frank Dodd, said the institute’s policy had been to introduce revolving secondment. This would replace the “bureaucracy of inspectors" with senior teachers who

took only temporary leave from active teaching. Mr Dodd said there was a need for inspectors to monitor how closely teachers were keeping to the curriculum, to plan in-service training programmes, to carry out administrative duties, and to maintain liaison with the public. “Any cut there would be a cut in the quality of education,” he said. ' Mr Dodd said the institute had yet to have formal discussions with Mr Wellington.
