Botham declines

NZPA London The English cricketer, lan Botham, turned down an offer of about £250,000 ($NZ580,000) to play in South Africa, according to British Sunday newspapers. In detailed accounts of negotiations which took a dozen top players to South Africa last week, the “Sunday Times” and the “Observer” said that Graham Gooch, the captain of the rebel team, has been promised £40,000 sterling ($NZ92,800) a year for playing in South Africa.

South Africa has been cut off from z international cricket for 12 years because of the white minority government’s policy of racial separation. The arrival of the English rebels in Johannesburg created a furore in the cricket world, jeopardising competition between England and Commonwealth teams, notably India and the West Indies. English cricket authorities are considering barring the rebels from playing again for this country.

The “Observer” quoted Botham’s lawyer, Alan Herd, in its account of escalating bids for the star’s appearance which it said were relayed from the South African organisers by the veteran batsman, Geoff Boycott, a leading figure among the rebels. It said the final offer was in the region of £60,000 ($NZ139,200) a year for four years. According to the “Sunday Times,” the offers rose to £ 125,000 ($NZ290,000) a year for two years.'
